Tuesday, October 7, 2014 12:02:00 PM

With this web announcement, Eurospace invites European space companies and contractors or sub-contractors to the European Space Agency to join the Space Chromate Task Force (STF) for REACH authorisation development. A broad participation of concerned industrial actors is encouraged. Find here the ESA support letter explaining the background and objectives.

The scope of STF (“Phase 2”), to which companies will commit initially in case of joining the STF, includes:

  • Joint Analysis of Alternatives (AoA) and Socio-Economic Analysis (SEA) for the use of chromium trioxide in Bonderite M-CR 1200 known as Alodine 1200 for chromic conversion coating on space hardware surfaces;
  • Agreement of application for authorisation strategy with key formulators;
  • Development of exemption documentation for laboratory use of Annex XIV-listed chromates - optional.

The total net cost for the mandatory parts of Phase 2 (AoA, SEA, agreement on application strategy with key formulator) is in the order of EUR 200,000 to be equally shared among participating entities (a minimum of 5 entities will be required to start activities). The work is planned to be completed by September 2015. REACHLaw Ltd. as the consultant is responsible for the work.

The subsequent finalization and submission of application(s) for authorisation will require additional work and funding (to be determined in 2015).

In order to obtain all information needed to join STF, please contact Tim BECKER (REACHLaw Ltd, tim.becker@reachlaw.fi, +358 40 773 8143) in the first place and/or Pierre LIONNET (ASD-Eurospace, pierre.lionnet@eurospace.org, +33 (1) 44420070).

The deadline for joining STF is October 31st, 2014. After that Eurospace will request each STF Member to sign a Purchase Order for its individual cost share and a Kick-Off Meeting shall be held as soon as possible.

Please note that all documents required for the sign-up have been agreed amongst the participants until the end of Phase 1 of STF (“Scoping Phase”). Hence, they are not subject to further negotiation of contents during the sign-up.
